A Children’s Book With A Twist
Exotic places, food, people. That’s what most of us would think of when we hear of overseas placements and further studies. The excitement. The perks. The kids would love living in London …Oh! The kids…?
The truth is most of us can’t relate or understand how our kids feel about moving to another country, another city, a new house, and a new school. Under normal circumstances, making friends is difficult enough; add a new environment to the mix, and the differences between the kids and their new classmates may seem like an abyss that is impossible to cross.
The author, Paddy Koh, knows this all too well. He should, seeing as he’s still in school! The 10 year old wrote this inspirational story when he himself experienced feelings of isolation and being ‘the odd one out’ after he attended schools in Australia and England. His experiences helped him realize that there is nothing wrong with being different. The story touches on various character traits such as kindness, generosity, friendliness, acceptance and forgiveness that the main character, ‘Octty’, learns and adopts.
