Find out where great ideas come from.
A businessman struggles with his luggage at an airport and pioneers the wheeled suitcase. An engineer watches people using walkie-talkies and dreams up the mobile phone. A printer is frustrated by his unpredictable inks and creates the Pantone colour system.
Why were these particular people able to identify a problem, and how did they discover the solutions that everyone else missed? Where exactly did their great ideas come from, and how did they go about making them a reality?
In pursuit of answers, Pagan Kennedy has spent her career examining the creative process, interviewing inventors and engineers, scientists, psychologists and economists in a bid to understand how we create. In Inventology Kennedy collects their wisdom and explores a series of landmark inventions, taking us through the processes by which we have come to dream up new products and technologies, and conceived solutions to ‘impossible’ problems.
A must-read for anyone who is curious about imagination, design and innovation, Inventology will inspire and entertain, and will show you how to become more creative.

The Rockwills GUIDE TO SUCCESSION AND TRUSTS IN WEALTH MANAGEMENT

This is also the age of the great transfer of wealth! We are seeing in our generation, the largest transfer of money in the history of the world. The trust is expected to feature in much of the wealth transfer. According to the Merrill Lynch Capgemini World Wealth Report of 2007b, The wealth of Asia-Pacific High Net Worth Individuals (“HWNIs”) totalled US$8.4 trillion in 2006 with the overall HWNI population growing by 8.6% in that year. India, China, Indonesia and Singapore were among the top ten countries with the fastest growing HNWI populations.

Trust and Fiduciary services increasingly feature and complement the wealth management services offered in many established jurisdictions. In Singapore, amendments were made to the Trustee Act in December 2004. This was a major step in modernizing the trust law in Singapore and to boost Singapore’s efforts to establish itself as a centre for wealth management and offshore trust.

This book, now in it’s 2nd edition provides a timely and comprehensive coverage of the various aspects concerning trusts and succession in wealth management. It is written for financial services professionals to help them plan in matters such as the structuring of a suitable vehicle for their clients to hold investments and other assets and the distribution of the Client’s wealth.

For decades there have been two iconic Japanese auto companies. One has been endlessly studied and written about. The other has been generally underappreciated and misunderstood. Until now.

Since its birth as a motorcycle company in 1949, Honda has steadily grown into the world’s fifth largest automaker and top engine manufacturer, as well as one of the most beloved, most profitable, and most consistently innovative multinational corporations. What drives the company that keeps creating and improving award-winning and bestselling models like the Civic, Accord, Odyssey, CR-V, and Pilot?

According to Jeffrey Rothfeder, what truly distinguishes Honda from its competitors, especially archrival Toyota, is a deep commitment to a set of unorthodox management tenets. The Honda Way, as insiders call it, is notable for decentralization over corporate control, simplicity over complexity, experimentation over Six Sigma–driven efficiency, and unyielding cynicism toward the status quo and whatever is assumed to be the truth. Honda believes in freely borrowing from the past as a bridge to “innovative discontinuity” in the present. And those are just a few of the ideas that the company’s colorful founder, Soichiro Honda, embedded in the DNA of his start-up sixty-five years ago.

As the first journalist allowed behind Honda’s infamously private doors, Rothfeder interviewed dozens of executives, engineers, and frontline employees about its management practices and global strategy. He shows how the company has developed and maintained its unmatched culture of innovation, resilience, and flexibility—and how it exported that culture to other countries that are strikingly different from Japan, establishing locally controlled operations in each region where it lays down roots.

For instance, Rothfeder reports on life at a Honda factory in the tiny town of Lincoln, Alabama, and what happened when American workers were trained to follow the Honda Way, as a self-sufficient outpost of the global company. Could they master Honda’s three core principles:

Embrace Paradox: Honda encourages respectful disagreement and debate between opposing viewpoints, on matters large and small. New ideas often emerge from conflict.

Real Place, Real Part, Real Knowledge: Honda teaches people to argue using facts, not assumptions. One must go to the factory floor, the showroom, the parking lot, the driver’s seat, or the truck bed—whatever it takes—to get the facts and make a decision that can be supported with data.

Respect Individualism: Honda often hires people with unusual backgrounds and independent streaks. It promotes those who question the status quo and who would probably struggle in organizations that focus on rigid rules and systems.

Rothfeder shows how the Alabama plant became a new model for manufacturing in America. It can turn out several different types of cars on any given day and up to 300,000 vehicles and engines a year. Its flexible model enables unparalleled responsiveness to market changes and recovery from mistakes.

As Soichiro Honda himself liked to say, “Success can be achieved only through repeated failure and introspection. In fact, success represents one percent of your work, which results only from the ninety-nine percent that is called failure.” Driving Honda: Inside the World’s Most Innovative Car Company

In “Today I’m Alice”, she describes her extraordinary journey from a teenage girl battling anorexia and OCD, drowning the voices, to a young woman slipping further and further into mental illness. It was only after years lost in institutions that she was correctly diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. When her alternative personalities were revealed in therapy she discovered how each one had their own memories of abuse and a full picture of her childhood finally emerged. As she learned to live with her many ‘alters’, she set out to confront the man who had caused her unbearable pain. Moving and ultimately inspiring, this is a gripping account of a rare condition, and the remarkable story of a courageous woman.
When Alice Jamieson was a teenager, strange things started happening to her. Hours of her life simply disappeared. She’d hear voices shouting at her, telling her she was useless. And the nightmares that had haunted her since early childhood, scenes of men abusing her, became more detailed …more real. Staring at herself in the mirror she’d catch her face changing, as if someone else was looking out through her eyes. Today I’m Alice: A Young Girl’s Splintered Mind, a Father’s Evil Secret

Introducing… Public Finance, 10th Global Edition, by Harvey S. Rosen and Ted Gayer Rosen and Gayer’s Public Finance provides the economic tools necessary to analyze government expenditure and tax policies and, along the way, takes students to the frontiers of current research and policy. While the information presented is cutting edge and reflects the work of economists currently active in the field, the approach makes the text accessible to undergraduates whose only prior exposure to economics is at the introductory level. The authors’ years of policy experience have convinced them that modern public finance provides a practical and invaluable framework for thinking about policy issues. The goal is simple: to emphasize the links between sound economics and the analysis of real-world policy problems. Enhancements and key features for this new Global Edition include: New Policy Perspectives introduce relevant and engaging examples of international policy so students can extend their understanding of theory to policymaking across the globe; New Empirical Evidence applications provide students with real-world examples that are relevant to them, from case studies about Sweden and China to global examples that compare experiences between countries; and updated end-of-chapter questions broaden critical thinking, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to international and comparative examples. The results of econometric models are used to help students understand how expenditure and tax policies affect individual behavior and how governments set policies. Integrated theory and analysis: Institutional, theoretical, and empirical material is interwoven to provide students with a clear and coherent view of how government spending and taxation relate to economic theory. Current research is presented alongside discussion of methodological and substantive controversies. The approach is modern, theoretical, and empirical, and shared by most active economists. Institutional and legal settings are described in detail, and the links between economic analysis and current political issues are emphasized. This Global Edition has been adapted to meet the needs of courses outside of the United States and does not align with the instructor and student resources available with the US edition. 9780077154691

Systematically revised and updated, the fourth edition of Public Management and Administration by Owen E. Hughes provides a broad-ranging and international introduction to the field and includes a new chapter on governance. In recent years there has been a transformation in the management of the public sector across many parts of the world. The rigid, bureaucratic form of public administration which dominated for most of the twentieth century has been replaced in the twenty-first century by a more flexible, market-based form of public management. As public management has developed away from New Public Management, it has moved even further away from the traditional model of administration. Public Management and Administration introduces and assesses the principles and theories underlying changes in the management of the public sector. Public management models are being adopted all over the world and the basis, nature and dimensions of these – as well as their theoretical underpinnings and differences – are considered in detail. The fourth edition of this highly successful text has been substantially revised and updated throughout and includes a new chapter on governance.
A strength of the book is the admirable clarity of its arguments. Indeed, this is one of the best written books of its kind that I have come across. Nor does it suffer from the limitations of country-specific studies, treating the NPM as an international phenomenon.’ – Chris Painter, Teaching Public Administration
